Greta Gerwig rescues the romcom

No missteps here

If, like me, a romcom is sometimes the only thing that will hit that sweet spot after a long week of contemplating the reversal of things (fortunes, working conditions, hard-won freedoms), then here’s some sweet relief from the usual fare. Even with a director as talented as Rebecca Miller (the only child of Arthur Miller and photographer Inge Morath) and the utterly wonderful Greta Gerwig in the leading role, things could have gone awry in this sort-of love triangle tale. But there are no missteps by Miller and Gerwig and their collaborators which include Ethan Hawke, Julianne Moore, and Bill Hade. In the end you’ll be rooting for the pickle-maker to be the baby-maker and come away knowing that even a genre as stuck-in-the-mud as the romcom can be delightfully subverted. And, like when you hear this classic Daddy Livingstone song featured in the movie's soundtrack, you’ll watch the credits roll by feeling perfectly content. Watch the trailer here and find it on Netflix.
