Grant & I
Inside and Outside The Go-Betweens
Robert Foster’s superb memoir
The Go-Betweens might rightly be described as 80s indie sensations on the back cover of this remarkable memoir but Robert Forster’s detailing of the breadline existence of an Australian band in London is essential reading for any southern hemisphere band aiming to have an international career. Of course, as is to be expected from the songwriter who memorably described the music he created with Grant McLennan as “that striped sunlight sound”, Grant & I is about so much more than how to reconcile undiluted critical success with never having enough money to live comfortably. Mostly, it’s the story of an era-defining, three-decade creative collaboration and friendship - and everything that comes with that. To celebrate Foster’s way with words, here’s the unexpectedly fabulous video for The Go-Betweens “Head Full of Steam” - one of the best songs ever written about infatuation.
